Rest in peace my little Dumpling

On Monday 18th February we had to take the awful decision of ending Lilek’s suffering. My little Dumpling had a tumour. We had taken him to the vet on 9th February, we were told it was either a tumour or an infection. Lilek was treated for more than a week (twice a day) with Baytril and also had some anti-inflammatory drugs.

I kept him by me almost constantly, feeding him Trill, Millet and water.

Unfortunately he did not recover, the tumour grew and he was losing weight at a rapid rate. We could see that he had problems breathing, even walking where the tumour was pressing on his leg.

I could have probably kept him going for another week, feeding him, helping him drink, but this is no way for a budgie to live.

We did the kindest thing that we could.

We both miss our little cheeky Dumpling, he was such a big part of our lives. He bit our fingers, toes and feet, but he touched our hearts. We were fortunate to spend time with him.

He is now in the land of millet, swings and mischief.

Aww I’m sorry Marianne. You did the best thing for him that’s for sure. Let me know if/when you’d like your signature changed. xx

Thanks Sue, it would be lovely of you to change it for me.

Oh no! That’s terrible news. It sounds like you did the right thing, though, as painful as it clearly was. R.I.P, Dumpling.

Thanks. It would have been selfish of me to let him suffer on for another week.

That is a lovely photo of Lilek. I hardly recognised him away from feet. 🙂 What a marvellous character he was. What an enormous loss too. 😦

Thank you. It never gets any easier. I have to hold on to the good times we had.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I still get teary-eyed over losing Blanche (my first budgie/mother or grandmother of the rest of them, also white like Lilek), but I could not stand to see her suffer either and had her put down. I remember the veterinarian asking me if I wanted a last word with her while she was under sedation. I held her and cried.
I’m glad they did it, but it was also the last time I took a small bird to a vet.
Thanks for your loving tribute to a beautiful bird.

Thank you Lisa. It was such a hard decision but it was not fair for him to go on suffering.
I held him in my hand, kissed him on the beak and told him that I loved him, before he was taken away.
When we can aford it he will be cremated. Poor little baby.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s never easy to lose one of our pets – they’re more than that, really – but he quite clearly had a great life. How are the other birds taking it?

So sorry to hear about Dumpling Marianne. He was definitely a little character and I know you will miss him so much. It is a hard decision to make to end a little friend’s suffering but it’s good to think of it as the last kindness we can show them. Thinking of you… Xx Ruth Paton
